Matilda is an exceptionally intelligent girl who hasn’t had much luck with her family since birth. Her parents fail to recognize her talents and generally treat their daughter as nothing more than a burden. The only place where Matilda finally finds people who can understand her is school. Matilda 1996 is a family film, but it doesn’t come across as overly childish.
The film was directed by Danny DeVito, who also played her father and served as one of the producers. Mara Wilson played the lead role—for her, *Matilda* became one of her most famous roles.
